I Could Have Helped Vinny Gambini (My Cousin Vinny) Relax and Focus…Really!
In the movie “My Cousin Vinny” (if you haven’t seen it…CHECK IT OUT!) there's a hilarious scene where Vinny Gambini (Joe Pesci) desperately has to focus on a court case to free his nephew Billy Gambini (Ralph Maccio) from a wrongful crime. Never mind that Vinny is not even an attorney, he’s from New York and stuck in Beechum County, Alabama (fictitious location) which is rural to say the least and it’s driving Vinny nuts because he can’t RELAX long enough to FOCUS. He hears everything while he tries to sleep from owls to coyotes, to crickets. The SOLUTION: Vinny breaks the law himself to get thrown in a noisy out of control jail cell as that’s what he’s used to in New York and consequently has the best night’s sleep he’s had in months!
Brain Waves…How Boring!
All of us relax and/or focus better in different environments. Give me a coffee shop with noise and I’m laser focused! Isolate me in Beechum County, AL and I’m Vinny begging for distractions in an effort to get blogs completed, prep for clients, and speeches framed up! However, while we’re all different, we all have the same brain waves of which only one helps us relax while the other helps us focus! Brain waves are electrical energy being generated when the brain’s neurons communicate. They’re measured in hertz (Hz) and are measured in cycles per second. Hang with me for just a little bit as it’s important to know that there are five brain waves (Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma) and one of them is OPTIMAL for relaxing while the other helps us focus!
The Alpha State and Beta State….What You Need to Know About Relaxing so that You Can Focus
At the risk of writing a blog too long to relax or focus, let me just tell you, the Alpha State (8-12 Hz) is the sound wave you want so that you can truly relax. For best results, let me give you Six ways to get those brain waves calmed down long enough to enter the Alpha state.
Drinking tea (black, green or white) - It contains Theanine which helps generate alpha brain waves
Aerobic exercise - about 30-40 minutes of exercise or yoga is a perfect way to lower cortisol (fear) and get in a relaxed state
Being in nature and just walking around, sitting, and admiring God’s creation!
A glass of wine (Now we’re talking!)....but don’t overdo it as the sugar component may play havoc getting into a deep sleep.
Positive/uplifting music - I have a soundtrack on my Spotify that instantly puts me in a great mood for relaxing
Meditation/breathing techniques (LINK to BREATHING blog) are probably the best! Making this a daily routine is CRITICAL.
So what about Focus?
Well, the beta brain waves (12-38 Hz) dominate our normal waking state where attention is directed towards cognitive tasks and the outside world. There are actually three levels of Beta from a fast idle, to high engagement (figuring something out), and a highly complex wave for engaging in new experiences. Enough of the science stuff…how do I get into this Beta Super Focused State?
Spotify and other music streamers make it super easy by typing in Focus and then presto….there are countless spotify playlist for deep focus. Now, a word of warning, you’ll hear a lot of funky sounds and noises of which you’ve never heard before. However, the waves are meant to block out distractions (i.e. lyrics that immediately take you back to a date or a party and instantly you're doing karaoke in the coffee shop).
Your environment speaks volumes about where to best concentrate. As mentioned earlier, I know my Strengths (StrengthsFinder) and while Focus is one of my Strengths, I also have WOO (Winning Others Over) of which being around people (with my Spotify Focus Playlist) actually allows me to do 2 or 3X what I would accomplish in a benign environment. Knowing your makeup and putting guardrails around that environment will do wonders for intense focus sessions.
So how do you relax and focus best? Are you Vinny and need something just short of a jail cell to get the rest you need so that you can focus? Give me some ideas and I’ll throw them into a follow up blog as I talk about the other brain waves and why they’re important.
This Blog is done….Now I can Relax:)
The 4 Keys to Managing Your Career! Purpose, Energy, Relationships, Mindfulness
If there are any positive after-effect from the pandemic (which is now 4 years old!), it’s that many people are putting their well-being FIRST! Everyone is rethinking purpose and what “lights them up” and organizations are now realizing leadership development needs a shift as well in order to attract, retain, and engage top talent.
After years of research, purpose, energy (sleep, nutrition, exercise, hydration), relationships, and mindfulness continue to be the keys to well-being at work…and at home! My personal mantra is that if you aren’t hitting on all cylinders at work, you won’t be fully engaged at home. And on the other hand, if things on the home front aren’t in alignment, you won’t be optimal at work.
Purpose - There is a Japanese word called “Ikigai''. Its meaning is “to have a reason to wake up''. There is no word in the Japanese dictionary for “retirement”. They go through life with meaning and daily engagement and many past 100 years of age. Over 30 years ago, Dr. George Land was asked by NASA to create a test to produce the best and brightest astronauts. This test was designed to find everyone’s “Genius”. However, Dr. Lands did something very interesting. He gave this test to 1600 preschoolers. To everyone’s amazement, they scored 98% on this assessment. He then waited until these pre-schoolers were 15 and gave them the same assessment…they now scored 12%. By the time they were in their early 30’s they scored a dismal 2%. What happened along the way? Why did they quit dancing in the moment as they did in preschool? Part of the theory is that they conformed. They lost their Ikigai and reason to wake up. For that reason, I’m a big believer in various assessments that help individuals and teams find their Ikigai otherwise known as their “swim lanes”. We all enjoy life more and are exponentially creative and effective when we know our purpose.
Physical Energy - While the pandemic played havoc on mental and physical wellbeing (i.e., 90M Americans suffer from level 1 and 2 PTS), everyone had more time to create good (and bad) habits eventually realizing that getting more sleep, cooking at home, taking walks and exercising were making a big difference in their energy levels.
For example, the consequences of poor sleep (less than 7 hours for adults) are higher blood pressure, diabetes/obesity, heart disease, and slow physical recovery. Having a consistent time going to bed and rising, better routines 2-3 hours before going to bed (i.e., no food/alcohol 3 hours before bed, shutdown work related activities 2 hours before and no technology 1 hour before sleep) will make a huge difference in your productivity the following day.
Nutrition - There are five key activities that break down our immune system and cause sickness and disease. Good Nutrition however is far and away the leader in protecting our immune system and staying healthy. While I don’t prescribe specific nutrition plans, the science around intermittent fasting and diets with modified proteins, vegetables/fruits, and healthy fats will play a huge role in protecting your heart and feeding the brain. As Hippocrates said in 460 BC, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”.
Exercise and movement are another key routine if you want higher amounts of energy. Exercise lowers cortisol (the hormone which causes fear), activates the amygdala (focus/emotion/behavior), increases the neuro-transmitter serotonin and dopamine (happiness/drive), and stimulates a tiny hair like substance on our chromosomes called telomeres which delays aging.
Relationships - While sleep, nutrition, and exercise can lower mortality by 25%, science is showing that happy and effective relationships can improve your mortality by 65%! Having happy and committed relationships, romance, close friendships, volunteering and caring for others, kindness, and optimism are all forms of healthy relationships. In addition to improving our mortality, healthy relationships lower cortisol (fear), stress/inflammation, and improve our memory. In fact, Gallup studies have shown that “those who [have a best friend at work] are seven times as likely to be engaged in their jobs, are better at engaging customers, produce higher quality work, have higher well-being, and are less likely to be injured on the job.
Mindfulness, or slowing down the brain in order to bring a sense of calm and clarity, is essential in today’s stress filled society where mental illness is becoming another major concern in society. The ability to take time to meditate, learn breathing techniques, visualization, journaling, and yoga is critical for wellbeing. When our brain waves are out of balance, there will be corresponding problems in both our emotional or neuro-physical health. Overarousal in certain brain areas is linked to anxiety disorders, sleep problems, nightmares, behavior issues, anger, aggression, and agitated depression. So, take the time to journal in the morning or before bedtime. Take some deep breaths in and out through the nose which releases nitric oxide to the lungs before that big presentation. Carve out certain times during the day to let mindfulness bring you greater clarity and wellbeing.
Summary
The pandemic seemed to have created a tipping point for most to re-think what it means to live a rich and intentional life. Science is teaching us that purpose, sleep, nutrition, exercise, healthy relationships, and mindfulness make us more effective at work and at home. I firmly believe that culture in all companies can and will be improved as leaders and managers are educated on the benefits of mental and physical well being. This greatly impacts individual and team engagement while retaining their greatest asset…YOU.
3 Steps to Reduce Anxiety At Work and Home
Imagine 20K (mostly inebriated) fans waiting with bated breath to cheer or jeer your golf swing while you're on one of the biggest stages in the world. That was the case last weekend at the #TPC Waste Management tournament on the 16th hole in Scottsdale, AZ where Sam Ryder and Carlos Ortiz got their aces. I got a chance to play the same hole a few days later...however, the shot is always easier when no one is watching!
While I can't guarantee a resting heart rate to remain under 65 during stress, I work with teams and leaders to develop #trust and #confidence in one another to perform under pressure. A few helpful hints:
Know who you are and who you're not! Find your swim lane and surround yourself with those that elevate you (and vice versa)
Learn how to breathe! Sounds easy right? Science shows that nasal breathing is far more effective than breathing through the mouth (i.e. air gets to the lungs more efficient). Several techniques (#boxbreathing, #wimhofmethod, #nasalbreathing) are really effective before tense situations (meetings/presentations/tough conversations)
Develop affirmation statements in the present tense (i.e. I am currently confident at.....vs. I will try......). Develop these affirmations, write them 3X before going to sleep daily and change your neurological "sound tracks" over the next 60 days.
These are just a few exercises for your and/or your team to reduce #anxiety, develop #confidence and perform at your BEST! Post any other techniques you use when you're on the big stage and please reach out as I would love to learn more so that I can post additional comments on #leadership and #teamdevelopment.
3 Important Lessons I Learned the first 90 Days Leading a New Division
Several years ago I was hired to elevate a demoralized culture and give hope to 150 employees that had experienced a toxic leader who was every Human Resource department's worst nightmare.
The job was an awesome opportunity and a challenge right up my alley! What I didn’t realize is that 149 employees had already decided who their next leader was…and it wasn’t ME! A very loyal and ultra-capable “2nd in Command” had paid his dues, had the right temperament, and was a safe psychological hire for these wounded warriors that had withstood years of abuse.
Strategy #1:Where There’s Silence, There is a Lack of TRUST…
While I checked off the boxes for weeks after taking the position including personally interviewing 75 of the team members plus countless other department heads to see where the bottlenecks were, there was still one virtue that needed to be tackled before I could be accepted….TRUST!
Developing trust became very apparent and most noticeable during one of my staff meetings. I was gifted a VERY competent staff and replacing any of them was not even on the board. However, I’m a leader who rarely has the answers but I definitely have questions and expect those “smarter than me” at the table to eagerly jump into action. As I worked my way around the table asking for updates, I still got the blank stares and uncomfortable quietness that speaks louder than words. I finally asked the “2nd in Command” for an update and got “nothing”. I asked him again and appeared to wake him up and he answered my question. However, I’m dying in the room! I’m wondering why I took this job and was witnessing the WORST meeting of my career.
Strategy #2: You Can’t Engage If You Don’t Ask For Opinions
The end of the meeting couldn’t come quick enough and I put my tail between my legs and walked dejectedly back to my office. One of the other executives in the meeting took a different route to my office and sprinted to meet me at the door. His response SHOCKED ME as he looked at me and said, “THAT WAS THE BEST MEETING WE’VE EVER HAD!”. I said, “you’ve got to be kidding me”! How deep in the gutter was this culture that I had inherited this meeting from hell that was in this executive’s opinion the best meeting they ever had?
I walked over to the office of Mr. “2nd in Command '' and calmly asked him, “Why were you so hesitant to respond to me when I asked you a question in our staff meeting? He looked at me and said something so simple yet so profound, “NO ONE HAS EVER ASKED FOR OUR OPINION”. Wow! The simple answer wasn’t tactical or technical, it was TRUST and giving each of them the RESPECT they deserved.
Strategy # 3: Come Clean as the Leader!
You can only guess my opening remarks at our next meeting. It started out with “I’m NOT the guy with the right answers to lead this organization… It’s each of YOU! And we’ll either succeed or fail but I guarantee you we’ll do it together. From that point on, they had a skip to their step and recognized they were directly responsible for our collective success. To this day we laugh about those first few meetings and will fall on the sword for each other. It was a learning experience that has served me well through the years.
Love to hear your story of when you or a leader recognized your gift and unleashed your competency. I would love to learn and possibly post your response in an upcoming blog. Thanks for “Listening”!
Building a Team the Right Way…6 Strategies from Steve Kerr, coach of the Golden State Warriors
Boy that Steve Kerr guy is lucky to have played for the Chicago Bulls, San Antonio Spurs, and THEN he gets blessed with great talent at Golden State! Some guys have all of the “luck”....Or maybe, Steve Kerr just GET’S IT!
Besides a really nice playing career in the NBA (5 titles with 2 teams), Steve Kerr has led the Golden State Warriors to three NBA titles as a coach who knows how to create a “WINNING CULTURE”. Yes, having Stephon Curry as a player could even make you and I a decent coach, Steve Kerr is a student of leadership management and culture. Being a coach in the NBA is less about X & 0’s and more about motivating mega wealthy guys under contract. In fact, when disputes arise, the coach is always the first to go.
So what is his secret to Leadership and Culture? Steve Kerr believes in one thing, “Where there is a great culture, people do great things! They try harder every day, become better, and play at a level above what others thought they were capable of''! Corporate America, are you listening?? During the Great Resignation, The Big Quit, The Great Reshuffle, or whatever you want to call it, a great culture and leadership wins every time.
So what are Coach Kerr’s biggest leadership lessons and how does he create a vibrant culture? Below are six strategies Steve has used to develop a winning culture for the Golden State Warriors.
He Speaks the truth candidly and stays focused on moving the team forward.
He fosters an environment where everyone has an equal voice. While some players have a greater natural gift than others, everyone contributes, everyone has value, and everyone is heard.
He listens and hears his players. The respect his players have for him comes from the fact that he listens and cares about their comments
He has created a culture of learning. A growth mindset combie3d with a cohesive team leads to players selflessly pushing themselves for the greater good.
He empowers his players to flourish. Facing a dip in team motivation, He empowered multiple players to coach the team leading to a blowout victory over the Phoenix Suns.
Steve Kerr is each player's strongest advocate! He always has their best interest in mind. Other players notice this (especially those that would like to play for the Warriors after their contracts have expired.
The strategies above are extremely relevant to any company and leader regardless of size or industry. As a leadership development enthusiast, I have invested (and certified) dearly in Patrick Lencioni’s leadership paradigm. It’s similar to Steve Kerr’s philosophy and starts with trust and authenticity. Once trust is established a team can engage in healthy conflict, commitment, accountability, and targeted results.
I love to talk about sports and would love your comments regarding Steve Kerr’s leadership philosophy and/or how Patrick Lencioni’s paradigm elevates and creates a culture of engagement. Finally, it never hurts to have Steph Curry draining 3’s while you’re the coach, but it takes a TRUE LEADER to get the best out of everyone on the team. I look forward to hearing from you!
I’m the Chief Navigator and I Demand to Know Where I’m Going! THREE Strategies to Starting a New Business or Career!
My dad often said this when we were in the car and to put it bluntly, “We were lost”. Oftentimes we’re leading and everyone thinks we have Google Maps tucked away in our cranium somewhere on instant recall but honestly, WE’RE LOST! My dad, like the rest of us driving the bus, didn't let us know we were lost but at least had the humility to make light of it.
So maybe we’re not lost but Google Maps would be ever so handy in the game of leadership and starting a business. When I started Oxygen Plus, in pure “Activator” fashion I took off running the 100M race. The problem I found out was that starting a company is more akin to the 3000M run (notice the difference in race vs. run?). I had already written a book, had several successful beta test clients over the years, and delivered numerous keynote speeches leading up to launching my company. So the next logical step is getting clients, right? I promptly sunk a decent amount of change on sales consultants before coming to the conclusion that maybe…just maybe…I should create a FOUNDATION before trying to land clients. Or more accurately I think God laughed at my Activator button, let me take a few left turns, and then put the necessary relationships in my life to WAKE ME UP!
Strategy #1: Create a Personal Board of Directors - I know, I’m being a little facetious but the bottom line is, Great Coaches and Leaders, employ even GREATER Coaches and Mentors. They learn from those that have been down the long and dusty road many times and lived to tell about it. Early on I created my own Board of Directors. I really couldn’t afford to pay anyone but I knew enough business leaders to ask for advice (retired Executives are GREAT resources!).
Strategy #2: Cash over Flash - Paying money up front for websites, applications, office accommodations, etc. may be critical, but keep it simple! Cash flow is important and it may be 2-3 years before you can pay yourself. Watch the pennies and focus on the client and what will bring in cash flow. I made the mistake of paying for a Sales coach before creating a foundation. I eventually worked with a business coach with a focus on who my ideal clients were so that I could focus accordingly. This was money well spent!
Strategy #3: Start With the End in Mind! - It’s simple advice! BREATHE before starting anything of importance, Visualize, and see the END IN MIND. I have clients envision their life/business venture five years out with great detail so that we can work backward. As you work backward from your vision, identify 30, 60, 90-day strategies to get started. Incorporate a Board of Directors mentioned above for their advice. Pivot if you must, but stick with the plan and have PATIENCE!
Please reach out as I love to hear any stories regarding getting started, successes, and ultimately creating a stable Foundation. I often post (without using names) great stories like yours and mine and my readers “love a good leadership story”!
SURGERY AND CURRENT BUSINESS HEADWINDS…WHAT THEY HAVE IN COMMON
There are a LOT of Headwinds in the economy these days. It will get better…but NOT without pain. I’m working with various organizations to create tailwinds out of these headwinds.
There are a LOT of Headwinds in the economy these days. It will get better…but NOT without pain. I’m working with various organizations to create tailwinds out of these headwinds.
Ironically, I recently had a tear in my meniscus resulting in knee surgery which in perspective mirrors a lot of the same pain I’m seeing leaders and organizations go through. I don’t wish either on anyone…but we’re going to have to deal with these headwinds for a while.
Lessons Learned From Surgery (and Leadership)
Don’t underestimate the pain (and leadership can be painful)!
Great doctors are only as strong as those they work with (i.e physical therapists, nurses, staff, etc), They will make your life MUCH easier!
The knee won’t heal itself…routines (systems) and a great physical therapist (mentors) accelerates the healing process immensely. The same goes for agility (business agile) at work!
Crutches (help) are typically needed at the onset…but true Leaders eventually learn how to toss the crutches aside. Leaders connect unique patterns and people and consistently create value.
Patience is the key to recovery! Successful outcomes take time (I wish I had heeded this advice!!)
Move on!
While we can hopefully avoid surgery, we can’t avoid recessions and tough times. There are days when it’s easy and days (that seem like months) that are painful! Some of your decisions will cost you or your company a lot of money, some may cost you credibility, however, time is always on your side. Surgeries and physical therapy (like leadership) are painful but most people heal (physically and mentally). Be patient, get the right doctor (mentor/advisor), and use every opportunity to LEARN along the way.
I’m developing an exhaustive tool kit for business leaders that will be posted under Coaching Tools at www.oxygen-plus.net
3 CAREER STRATEGIES BEFORE YOU GET THE PINK SLIP
If you’re like me…you want to LEAD! From early on everything came fairly easy. Growing up in a small midwest farming community, I excelled in sports, theater, school, and just about anything I put my mind to…Went to college to play football, get a degree and launch a fast-tracked career because…well, success had always been right around the corner!

Growing up in a small midwest farming community, I excelled in sports, theater, school, and just about anything I put my mind to…Went to college to play football, get a degree and launch a fast-tracked career because…well, success had always been right around the corner!
This Stuff Doesn’t Happen to Me…Does It?
After college, my wife and I moved to Dallas and I was determined to take it by storm! That’s what Leaders like you and I do, right? Move on and move up! And then, HUMILITY and REALITY set in. Within five months (and because I didn’t understand how the real world worked), I was given a 30-day notice to “Get on Track or Find Another Job”.
In hindsight, this was absolutely the BEST thing that ever happened in my career as a leader. After the harsh ultimatum, I went back to my small apartment, buried my head (shed a few tears), and came to this conclusion:
Strategy #1: I WILL NEVER ALLOW OTHERS TO DICTATE MY FUTURE…MY SUCCESS BELONGS TO ME!
Create a Career Strategy…Before Your Forced To
That afternoon I wrote several goals on the back of an envelope. I listed courses, certifications, goals, and the work ethic I would adhere to over the next 36 months. I made a decision to seek business contacts and leaders that could give me wise advice and counsel that I couldn’t get on my own. Within three years, with total humility and strong faith, I met every goal on that envelope and have been fortunate enough to survive 35 years in the corporate world as both an entrepreneur and Fortune 500 executive. I’m also an author, keynote speaker, and consultant/coach to many organizations and leaders.
Strategy #2: Be Intentional About Scheduling Plan B
To be successful you MUST have a PLAN! In fact, after 35 years in the corporate real estate industry, I found myself again on the “outside looking in”. The company was looking to shed 30-50K employees and the All-Star team I was blessed to have assembled and coached could be downsized with an opportunity for me to leave earlier than anticipated. How did it affect me this time?
NOT AT ALL! I ALREADY KNEW MY PURPOSE, STRENGTHS, AND AMBITIONS. I HAD INTENTIONALLY SCHEDULED TIME FOR “PLAN B” YEARS IN ADVANCE.
In fact, I had been researching the physiological, psychological, and neurological effects of leaders for over 10 years. I had been speaking across the country and wrote a book titled “Living a Rich and Intentional Life”. Little did I know that my “life lesson” right out of college reinforced my mantra “MY SUCCESS BELONGS TO ME”!
Strategy #3: Know Your Gifts (and your Kryptonite)
As a Consultant and Executive Coach, I’m committed to helping Leaders know their strengths, blindspots, and ideal swimlane. There are many assessments of which I use an assortment depending on the client’s situation (StrengthFinders, DiSC, and Kolbe A). The key is to basically articulate with full clarity your sweet spot and build on your gifts. As for weaknesses, it’s best to be aware (especially when under stress) but not give energy to areas that don’t serve you in the long run.
What’s your story? Have you experienced some extreme humility along the way? Love to hear your story! Please drop me a note as I would love to learn more from you and others that have had to pivot without notice. Thanks and Live a Rich and Intentional Life!
WAIT… I THOUGHT I HAD CONTROL OF MY CAREER AND THE ECONOMY?
I have an unfortunate advantage over most readers, I’ve experienced more bear markets and recessions than most of you. Having started my career in Dallas, TX in the early-mid ’80s, it was RECESSION PROOF! Houston was on life support because of oil, and the Rust Belt was…well, the Rust Belt. And inflation and interest rates were almost illegal (ie.15-20% mortgages). But I lived in Dallas, TX where NOTHING COULD GO WRONG!

And inflation and interest rates were almost illegal (ie.15-20% mortgages). But I lived in Dallas, TX where NOTHING COULD GO WRONG! In fact, by the time I was 25 I owned two homes and was looking to invest in more. What could go wrong???
Yikes…Didn’t see that coming!
Within a few years and after legislative changes to banking that no one could predict, the stock market and people’s lives crashed! While I made it through the 80s cash neutral, I considered myself lucky and fortunate. From that time on, I’ve learned to NEVER say NEVER…just as I did 6 months ago.
The economy is still in favor of the employee but leverage is evaporating depending on the industry. Wages have increased 4% in 2022 and chances are you won’t be out of a job long but may have to make a few more concessions. But, if you thought the recession in 2008 was a “one-time thing”, I urge you to learn a lesson I learned early in life…. NEVER say NEVER! With mortgage rates nearing 6%, gas prices exceeding $5-6/gallon, and GDP going “Stupidly” high, companies have less in the coffers to invest and grow. The natural reaction is to cut or quit posting new jobs. And the government and world economy can always throw a legislative curveball that can swing things in a different direction (aka Russia/Afghanistan??)
3 Strategies To Future Proof Your Career
Focus on the BIG MONTHLY EXPENSES! Small stuff (daily coffee at your favorite barista) adds up but it’s pennies on the dollar compared to the BIG stuff (rent/mortgage/utilities/car payment/insurance premiums, etc.). Focus and create strategies for any expenses over 10% of your monthly take-home pay.
Quit jobs if you must BUT on good terms. It’s a small world and bad exits have a way of creeping back into your life at the wrong time.
Find what you love best and be the best at it. If the pandemic has taught us anything it’s that life is short, can change on a dime, and regrets are no fun. Get a mentor/coach or someone that can guide you to being THE BEST VERSION OF YOU!
And remember, NEVER say NEVER! Trust me on this one! There will be multiple highs and lows throughout your career. Just be PREPARED in either cycle!
